Research Statement and Annotated Bibliography

The research field that I have chosen is Gothic Architecture and the meanings behind its common characteristics.

A book with a single author
Frankl, P. (1962). Gothic Architecture. Harmondsworth, England: Penguin Books.

The content of this book clearly shows the meaning and follows the development of the Gothic style across Europe. It is a useful text because it provides information on all aspects of Gothic architecture and analyses the evolution of the Gothic style.

A scholarly journal article
Robichaud, P. (2002). Gothic Architecture in the poetry of David Jones and Geoffrey Hill. Mosaic-A Journal for the interdisciplinary study of literature, 35(4), 181-197

This journal article shows us the different views of aesthetic value, of David Jones and Geoffrey Hill through their poetry. This is useful as it shows the symbolic, historical and formal significance of Gothic Architecture, which relates to my research field.

An edited book
Hall, M. (Ed.). (2002). Gothic Architecture and its Meaning. United Kingdom :Spires Books Ltd. In association with the Georgian Group

The book provides the reader with the history and interpretations of medieval architecture. This will be a useful source as it provides an overview of Gothic architecture and the significance of certain common characteristics.

A website
Martindale,A.H.R. (1995). Gothic Art and Architecture. Retrieved from http://history-world.org/gothic_art_and_architecture.htm

This website contains information on the history and the characteristics of Gothic style architecture and the meaning behind these features. This will be beneficial as it specifically shows useful information in the subject field that I am researching, the meaning behind Gothic architecture.

This image portrays a common Gothic Styled building. This poster is a view of Vienna which you can see St. Stephen’s Cathedral. This image will be useful as it visually shows common characteristics of a Gothic styled building, making it easier to understand and visualise.

Individual Work (Technical)

Individual Work: Cutaway of Calculator

For my individual drawing I chose to do a cutaway drawing. This appealed to me because it is simply an isometric view with a twist, it provides a 3-dimensional view that is easy to see different aspects of the design. What interested me the most was that from the drawing you can see both the outside of the object, as well as the inside. This is a unique style that I was interested in portraying.

Design Persona

I am Emma Bradley and I am from South Taranaki. I have lived on a dairy farm all of my life and I am the oldest of five children. Moving to the city has been a fairly daunting, however very exciting new experience. This year I am living at Joan Stevens Hall, and studying a Bachelor of Design Innovation, Majoring in Industrial Design along with a minor in Marketing.

I have come to Design School because design has always been something that I have enjoyed, ever since I was a little girl making houses out of shoe boxes. Design has always appealed to me because it is more hands-on and practical subject. Throughout all of my years at high school my favourite subject was graphics, this has taught me the basics of design principles and the design process, and I would like to further my education in this field.

My inspirations at this point have come from previous work and research that I have done at high school. One of the most significant units which interested me was the Bauhaus, the overall simplicity of their work appealed to me by their use of colours, materials and shapes. I am looking forward to investigating more designers and individuals, which I am sure will provide me with exciting new inspiration.

In the future I firstly aspire to complete my Bachelor of Design Innovation. With this I intend on pursuing a career in the industry doing something that I love and am skilled at. I am looking forward to the opportunities that will become available to me from this course. I want to be involved in the design of everyday products to develop them to assist people the best way possible. I feel that design is an essential part of life as it can be found everywhere.

Helvetica Sound Bite

The white spacing between the letters is what makes it special, like with music the gap between the notes is what makes the music.
